VIDEO PREMIERE: LOVE IN THE PRC, WITH "MR. RED"

Cui Jian (China)
Mr. Red

Cui Jian is a Beijing-based Korean Chinese singer-songwriter, trumpeter and guitarist. Affectionately called "Old Cui"(he was born August 2, 1961), he is considered to be a pioneer in Chinese rock music and one of the first Chinese artists to write rock songs. For this distinction Cui Jian is also labeled "The Father of Chinese Rock." Cui Jian often used communist themes in a satirical way and was banned from performing in China after his role in performing for students during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Some have pointed to the communist title and imagery in "Mr. Red" as another satirical attack on China's Communist Party...and certainly the lines "If love is at stake, what the f--k is a song, If life is at stake, what the f--k is love" is up for interpretation. But the rest of the lyric reads far more tamely; that the pursuit of love is an irresistable instinct.

ON THE BLOG: INTERVIEW WITH TANYA TAGAQ

Tanya Tagaq is an Inuit who has taken the traditional folksinging techniques of her people onto the international stage and performed with the likes of Bjork and The Kronos Quartet. But hers is a variation on the technique: whereas it is usually a game sung by two women directly into each others mouths, Tagaq has turned it into an extended solo performance, one that requires extraordinary strength and stamina. We think our interview captures some of her surprising personality and sense of identity. Plus, we got to get really up close while she was singing!

Few musicians have the legendary status of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the flamboyant man who created Afrobeat, and lived through beatings, jailings and tragic personal loss, even as he continuously confronted the corrupt Nigerian government. Now a new musical based on his life and work is hitting Broadway. With direction and choreography by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, "Fela!" is a swirling dynamo of a play that truly captures the spirit of Fela Kuti and his times. The music, performed by Antibalas, recreates all the raw energy and power of Fela’s Afrobeat, and is hip-shakingly irresistible. New York Magazine says of Sahr Ngaujah, who plays Fela, "he makes it seem as if he was born for the job."

GLOBAL LENS: FAST FOOD AND FAST TIMES IN "BUNNY CHOW"

Bunny Chow (South Africa)
Directed by John Barker
Afrikaans, Tsotsi Taal and English, with subtitles in English
South Africa, 2006, 95 minutes

"This slice of life picture has a stylish, youthful energy, recalling early Spike Lee."
-The Hollywood Reporter

In director John Barker’s debut feature, up-and-coming comedians Kags, Joey, and Dave make clear that life in the ‘new’ Johannesburg is not just about hardship and townships. It’s also about finding humor in relationships, hanging out with friends. and celebrating life on a raucous roadtrip to Oppi Koppi—South Africa’s largest music festival. Shot in a cinema vérité style and using the street food ‘bunny chow’ as a metaphor for contemporary Johannesburg’s mix of races, cultures. and attitudes, Barker’s edgy, urban comedy asks us to envision a nation through the eyes of its future, rather than the tragedy of its past.
