Our piece on the best lyricists around today turned into a bit of a monster, prompting nearly 700 comments. We noticed, though, that almost all those comments mentioned male songwriters. To redress the balance, Emily Mackay has picked out her own favourite female lyricists.

Speaking of 'women in rock' - hideous phrase, I know - Rae Alexandra has written a piece bemoaning the absence of angry, politicised female punks in today's scene. I'm not sure I agree - surely Alice Glass and Beth Ditto are as powerful role models as, say, Babes In Toyland ever were? Still, feel free to pile into the debate.

And if all this arguing is a bit much for a Friday afternoon, head over to the Bored At Work blog for a cleansing blast of time-wasting viral nonsense. I'm particularly enjoying the clip of the overly-coiffured emos murdering a White Lies track on the Italian 'X Factor'.
