VIDEO PREMIERE: GANGSTAS AND THE GHOST OF MICHAEL JACKSON

Gipsy.cz (Czech Republic)
"Reprezent"

This one is so out it's in...and you don't need to speak Czech to know it.
You may remember the fun of this band's first video, "Romano Hip Hop" that combined gypsy violins, dancing babes and of course, Romany rap. Now the boys are back with video that is self-deprecating even while it struts. After all, just how BAD a ride is a Zhiguli. (Probably pretty bad, but sometimes bad is bad. And then, if your ride's a beat up Lada, you'd better have a sense of humor.)

ON THE BLOG: CAN TURKISH FOLKSONGS MAKE IT INTO THE MAINSTREAM?

Anatolian Melodies, Pop Sensibilities

This past summer we were lucky enough to have Sertab Erener and her husband Demir Demirkan come by the studio to talk about their latest project "Painted on Water." For those you who are not familiar with them, Sertab is a pop diva from Istanbul, and her rendition of "Every Way That I Can" (written by Demirkan) which won the Eurovision Song contest in 2003 cemented her place in the hearts of the Turkish public. In this rare unplugged performance and intimate interview, one can plainly see that the couple truly enjoy each other's company, as they talk about their music, their work method, and how the "Painted on Water" project developed. We really wanted them to demonstrate how the songs went from Turkish folk to mainstream pop, and they did that readily. Keep an eye out for more from this interview in upcoming blogposts-- like a performance where Sertab demonstrated her operatic chops and her pop stylings, all in one song!

GLOBAL LENS: KEPT AND DREAMLESS

Kept and Dreamless (Las Mantenidas Sin Sueños)

Directed by Vera Fogwill and Martín Desalvo
Spanish, with subtitles in English
Argentina, 2005, 94 minutes

"Matching style and originality with a refreshing lack of moralizing, Kept & Dreamless keeps the banner of Argentinean independent cinema flying high…"
-Deborah Young, Variety

During Argentina’s economic crisis of the '90s, nine year-old Eugenia and her mother, Florencia, live a seemingly colorful life surrounded by eclectic neighbors and an offbeat collection of family. But for Eugenia, who must deal with her mother's dysfunctional and drug-addled lifestyle, life is anything but pleasant in this darkly inspiring story of expectation, acceptance, and an utterly unconventional family, led by standout performances from director Vera Fogwill and young actress Lucía Snieg.
