VIDEO PREMIERE: TANGO MACABRE FROM DVA

Dva (Czech Republic)
Nunovo Tango

Here's another video from the endlessly creative duo Dva.  Bára Kratochvílová and Jan Kratochvíl may not speak a lot of languages, but they sure know how those languages SOUND. Their last video, "France Trance" was sung in a convincing faux French. We have our own theories, but let's open this one up to you, the viewer. What language do you think they are mimicking in "Nunovo Tango?" At any rate, this has got to be one of the coolest videos we've received recently, referencing a host of classic horror/SciFi movies like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," "The Mummy," "The Werewolf," "Frankenstien"and "A Trip to the Moon" just to name the few we spotted. With it's Tim Burtonesque feel, we should probably rerun this one at Halloween!

DOC DEBUT: MUSICAL TRANSFORMATIONS WITH "INTANGIBLE ASSET NO. 82"

Intangible Asset No. 82
Director: Emma Franz

In South Korea, those people that the government considers cultural treasures or "intangible assets" are given numbers. "Intangible Asset No. 82" tells the story of Simon Barker, a respected Australian jazz drummer and his search for the South Korean shaman and grandmaster musician, Kim Seok-Chul, whose music has touched him profoundly. The journey becomes an odyssey, as he is introduced by his guide Kim Dong-Won, to other great traditional artists, and must overcome cultural obstacles and the march of time to eventually meet the master only days before his death.

Barker's respect for the traditional music and his willingness to be taught, opens doors and hearts along the way and the film is a Rosetta Stone of sorts, as through the eyes and ears of Barker, we arrive at our own understanding of a philosophy and music that can seem alien to Western sensibilities. While the inner journey is marked by revelation, the outer journey is visually stunning, with magnificent vistas of South Korea's mountain ranges, verdant fields, waterfalls and small towns.

ON THE BLOG: 3-PART INTERVIEW WITH KIM DONG-WON

We were lucky to snag Kim Dong-Won when he was in town performing at Lincoln Center with YoYo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. He graciously spent time with us, explaining about how he became the main mover in "Intangible Asset No. 82." He even shared his insights into the psychology of Korean drumming, and the techniques and spirit of Pansori singing. He kept apologizing for his poor English, but despite hesitations here and there, he gave a substantive interview, chock full of fascinating information, and heartfelt commentary.
