VIDEO PREMIERE: TANCHAZ FUSION FROM NAPRA

Napra (Hungary)
"Little House"

No, it's not the National Agricultural Pesticide Risk Analysis, or the North American Pocketbike Racing Association. It's not an acronym at all, it's Napra, a terrific folk fusion band from Hungary. In the band's video, "Little House" we are fairly bombarded with great images, great music and great musicianship.  Kálmán Balogh, one of Hungary's best cimbalom players is on board, but it is Miklós Both who steals much of the show with his guitar acrobatics, blending the odd meters of Hungarian dance tunes with the full pallette of electronic possibilities. Pay attention, and don't let all the tasty fills by the combined fiddle, accordion and guitar whiz by! This is an evolution of tanchaz that feels just right.

CINEMONDO: REDEMPTION AND REVENGE IN DARATT

Daratt
Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun
Austria /Belgium/Chad/France, 2006, 96 minutes

Winner — Grand Jury Prize, 2006 Venice Film Festival
Official Selection — 2006 Toronto Film Festival

Taking place in Chad, Mahamat-Saleh Haroun's Daratt has the sparse and cryptic feel of ancient myth. Having found out that the murderer of his son is to be granted Amnesty after the civil war, a grandfather sends his grandson on a quest: Kill the murderer. Do not return until you do. Thus, Atim embarks on a journey to N'Djamena, the capitol, to seek out his target, the baker Nassara. But Nassara is a haunted man, who has lost his larynx, and whose bakery is in danger of bankruptcy. When he takes Atim in as an apprentice, Atim soon finds that taking the life of another man is not a simple matter. Told as a series of beautifully composed tableaus, Daratt has its own voice and vocabulary with which it tells an eternal story of revenge and redemption.

“…the film has the feel of a gift.” — Manohla Dargis, New York Times
