I've been to some terrible festivals in my time. Torrential rain. Flooded tents. Overflowing portaloos. Headline sets from Travis. Name a humiliating indignity, and I've suffered it.

That said, I've never been to a bash quite as disaster-packed as this year's wind-ravaged Benicassim. It inspired us to ponder the subject of the bleakest festivals ever. If you think you've endured a worse event than the ones we mention, let us know. You poor thing.

This week we've also been debating the Mercury Prize nominations. Frankly, it got us pretty angry, so we put together our own alternative list of the past year's best British albums. Let us know who you think's been overlooked, too.

One last thing to tell you about: we've got a new metal show starting on NME Radio this Sunday at 7pm, in conjunction with Metal Hammer magazine and Sonisphere Festival. Tell your horn-throwing friends...

They're from New York (but not Brooklyn) and they're bringing big, orchestral rock with echoey wails back. Come grab a free track from The Daily Download.
