VIDEO PREMIERE: A STREET NAMED VASEN |
|
 Väsen (Sweden) Väsen Street
Sweden's power folk trio are back, with their signature sound- tight ensemble playing, the soulful violin of Mikael Marin, intriguing chord inversions courtesy of Roger Tallroth, and the prizewinning playing of the stringed Stegosaurus, otherwise known as the Nyckelharpa, by Olov Johansson. The band is so well liked in Bloomington Indiana, that there is a movement afoot to name a street after them. Väsen was so touched they wrote this song, in support of the idea. The performance is from the last Nordic Roots festival in Minneapolis, at the Cedar Cultural Center, a terrific venue and place to hang out if you're passing through town. |
VIDEO BLOCK #116 "FUN" DEBUTS THIS WEEK |
|
Here's a block to lift your spirits! Spain's El Puchero Del Hortelano may be singing of serious matters, but they turn it into a romp in the country. Jair Oliveira presents a toe-tapping number about the need for play and the Czech Gypsy band Terne Chave turn in a high powered performance that swings and percolates. Colombia's Adriana Lucia peddles her bicycle while spreading flowers and good vibes and Peret plays a doctor dealing with a patient who claims he has gotten fat by drinking water! We close with Gael Garcia Bernal and two sexy mamacitas in a song from the film "Rudo y Cursi" that's a total send up of Mexican video clichés. CINEMONDO: DISTANT LIGHTS |

Distant Lights Germany, 102 min Dir: Hans-Christian Schmid
Official Selection — 2003 Tribeca Film Festival Winner — FIPRESCI Prize, 2003 Berlin Film Festival Winner — Silver Film Award, 2003 German Film Awards
To some it’s the end of the world, to others it’s the gateway to a new life: the river Oder between Poland and Germany. Vibrant with expectancy, this place is a magnet for people on a journey towards happiness, security and a better life. At this crossroads between two worlds Ukrainian refugees beg and bargain for entry to the West and pin all their hopes on Polish help; a teen-aged cigarette smuggler defies his father and brother to free the girl he loves from a detention center; an interpreter risks her career and her freedom to help an illegal refugee; and, a hapless businessman loses everything he owns but gains something more important. On the banks of the Oder, the law of the land is that of pure self-preservation as men and women struggle to maintain their dignity and values while they are stripped to the raw core of their existence. While some hopes and dreams are doomed, others come to pass with the quiet joy of a small and humble miracle.
“This ambitious, engrossing multi-strand drama flits back and forth across the German-Polish border, finding desperate Eastern European refugees on one side, economic recession on the other, cynicism and corruption in between. Schmid's moving film asks what responsibilities we have to our impoverished neighbours, but more than that, posits 21st century capitalism as morally and socially bankrupt.” - Time Out London

Black Rider Dir: Pepe Danquart Germany 12 minutes.
What would you do when confronted by naked prejudice in the form of a bad tempered old lady -- and you had to sit next to her on a bus? To find out see the multi-award-winning short film Black Rider (Schwarzfahrer).
"Pepe Danquart's Academy Award® winning short film captures the dignity of a man confronted with a problem many of us may have faced in a foreign culture. And when dealing with ignorance and intolerance, nothing makes more of a statement than the power of humor." - Film Movement
