VIDEO PREMIERE: A POOR MAN'S BLUES, CAPE VERDE STYLE

Lura (Portugal/Cape Verde)
Quebrod Nem Djosa

"The day before yesterday, the Devil tempted me....he wanted me to steal from someone else...I'm poor as a churchmouse."

These days almost everyone is having hard times, and so a video like this is very timely.  But despite its sad lyric and the presence of the repo man, the video has a light touch, as has the music. Cape Verdeans seem to lilt, even when they are heartbroken!
And if you enjoy the lovely Lura in this video, be sure to check out a live performance from her and her excellent band on our blog. She is a consummate performer with a tireless voice and an athletic presence-- she initially wanted to be a dancer or a swimming teacher! We are lucky she chose otherwise.

CINEMONDO: MURDER IN THE MINES, IN "BLIND SHAFT"

Blind Shaft
Directed by Li Yang
China, 2003, 89 minutes

Winner - Silver Berlin Bear, 2003 Berlin International Film Festival
Winner - Best Feature, 2003 Tribeca Film Festival

Blind Shaft tells the story of two itinerant miners (Song Jinming and Tang Chaoyang) who have a murderous money making system. In the dark caves of one of the many illegal Chinese coal mines, Song and Tang murder co-workers whom they have convinced to pose as the duo's relatives. By making the co-worker’s death seem like an accident for which the mine owner could be investigated by the government, they are able to extort hush money. After leaving with the loot from their latest kill, Tang and Song hit a nearby town and soon come upon another potential “relative,” this time an innocent 16-year-old boy named Yuan Fengming, who has been forced to quit school due to his father’s disappearance. Tang agrees to help Yuan find a job at a coalmine, but only under one condition - he must agree to pretend to be Song’s nephew. As Tang and Song spend time with their new prey, the boy's simplicity and naiveté gradually alter the partners’ relationship, and the two men’s schemes takes an unexpected turn.

DEVOUT DUO: ALIM AND FARGANA QUASIMOV

Alim and Fargana Qasimov: Spiritual Music of Azerbaijan

"To be a musician, there has to be a fire burning in you," declares Alim Qasimov, Azerbaijan’s most beloved traditional singer. In these deeply spiritual recordings of Azeri classical mugham and lyrical bardic songs, Alim merges his own consummate musicianship with that of his talented daughter Fargana, and with the energetic accompaniment of a young ensemble performing on tar, kamancha, balaban, oud, and drums. This documentary also offers an intimate portrait of the Qasimovs and their musical lives in Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital city.
This program is also streamed.
