Arctic Monkeys and My Chemical Romance studio news, NME unveils the 'Future 50', and the greatest bass players ever

The art of playing bass - I mean really playing, not just hammering away at the chunky string like most indie musicians do - gets a bad rap.

The connotations are of smug, pony-tailed blokes noodling away (like this chap), 'popping' and 'slapping' to the amusement of no-one but themselves. Think Flea. Think Level 42. Think the 'Seinfeld' theme.

But there are truly gifted bassists too, people like Andy Rourke of The Smiths or The Cure's Simon Gallup, who deploy the instrument in melodically imaginative ways. Then there are the ones who just look damn cool swinging a four-string, like Nicky Wire or Interpol's Carlos Dengler.

Anyway, we thought it was high time we rescued the topic from the realm of tedious jazz-fusion nerds. Hence our poll to determine the greatest bass player ever. Once you've voted, head to the office blog to join the inevitable slanging match ("WHERE THE CHUFF IS JAH WOBBLE?" etc etc).

Meanwhile, there are loads of big albums on the horizon, which means the NME blogs have been ablaze with ferocious debate on the likes of Arctic Monkeys' 'Humbug', and Muse's forthcoming new single, 'Uprising'. We've also had a fruitful, enlightening thread on the subject of the loudest tracks ever (thanks to 'Mental' for bringing the delightful Stalaggh to my attention).

Oh - one more thing: we had a redesign last week. Most people seem to like it, but please do keep the feedback coming.
