VIDEO PREMIERE: GET ON YOUR FEET WITH "GATI" FROM ZAP MAMA

Zap Mama (Belgium)
"Gati"

We don't know how this one slipped by us-- it's not the latest video from the venerable world music pioneers Zap Mama, headed by Marie Daulnes, but it is certainly a charmer. The latest CD is called "ReCreation" but "Gati" comes from the 2007 CD "Supermoon" and this song with its lighthearted feel is dedicated to the Pygmies who rescued Marie and her mother from the Congolese rebels that had killed her father. (Zap Mama's vocal stylings frequently reference the hocketing that characterizes pygmy music, in which a song is divided in such a way that each person sings one note, and the group creates the total expression of the melody by singing the notes individually in sequence.) "Gati" the video, is an explosion of childlike joy; a romp in the playpen, with a tickle to the ribs.

ON THE BLOG: LIVE PERFORMANCE FROM NAPRA

Sure their video of "Little House" which we premiered a few weeks back is smokin' --but can they do it live? The answer is a resounding YES. Check out the breakneck Ukros, a rocked out, traditional dance from Napra and let yourself get blown away by this band's inventiveness and chops. Taped at the Palace of Arts in Budapest in 2008, this is a terrific group of musicians who deserve be seen and heard outside their native Hungary. What's a blog for if we can't push our faves?

CINEMONDO: A LANDMARK FILM FROM EGYPT, "CAIRO STATION."

Cairo Station
Egypt, 76 minutes
Dir: Youssef Chahine

In this beautiful classic film directed by Youssef Chahine, Cairo's main railroad station is used to represent all of Egyptian society. We see a community comprised of luggage carriers and soft-drink vendors living in abandoned train cars. A crippled newspaper dealer, Kinawi (Chahine himself), falls in love with the beautiful but indifferent Hanuma, a lemonade seller who only has eyes for the handsome Abu Sri. Swept away by his obsessive desire, Kinawi kidnaps the object of his passion, with terrible consequences. Chahine received international recognition when this masterpiece of sexuality, repression, madness and violence among society's marginalized played at the Berlin Film Festival.

CATCH THE BEAUTY OF THE ALTIPLANO, IN "HUINAY"

We have had many viewers write in, asking us about this haunting film, and this week there are many opportunities to catch it.
Director Patricio Schmidt and his crew took time away from shooting a commercial to film the beautiful plateau that is Huinay, Chile. With few resources and using rudimentary production techniques and local peasants, the filmmakers had to endure the bitterly cold climate in order to produce this magnificent short. It captures the light and the sweep of the great plain, and is also an opportunity to hear indigenous music and language, within the context of a sparsely told tale.
