Let's be honest, there's only one thing on people's minds right now - the battle for the Christmas Number One. The latest chart stats suggest Rage Against The Machine's lead over Joe McElderry and the forces of darkness has narrowed to just 9,000 sales, with potentially the biggest day for impulse X Factor buyers (Saturday) still to come.

So it the race over? Don't bank on it. RATM's surprise live performance on the BBC - cut short because Zack started bellowing "F*** you!" - has given them an extra PR boost. And big names such as Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney have come out in support of the Californian band. The momentum is all theirs.

Of course, the X Factor have the not inconsiderable advantage of the fact that Joe McElderry has been beamed into millions of the nation's front rooms for the past few months. So I'm not holding out too much hope of a Rage victory.

Anyway, make sure you keep up with the latest developments on the Rage Against The Machine Vs The X Factor blog. And whatever happens on Sunday, have a great weekend.

Radar: the best new music of the week - first
The Ramshackle Union Band The Ramshackle Union Band At the moment, the older the style of music the cooler it is. We ran a feature last week in the mag about the staggering proliferation of ukulele bands of late. It's tricky to tell what triggered this new era.

The new buzz genre-renaissance in 2010 is going to involve hitting a piece of flint again a cave wall and grunting at the moon.

Head over to Radar this week to download a free MP3 of 'Magdalene'.
